Can Technology Make You A Better Writer?
December 25th 2006 15:52
As a business woman, I often encounter opportunities to write. Emails, letters, Ad copy, and articles all require me to put down the to-do list, and focus long enough to make my thoughts permanent. Sometimes, in the process of writing, the phone will ring or something takes my attention away for a moment, and when I return to the project, I have lost the ability to think creatively, or the ability to put my thoughts into words. This was a huge problem for a while. However, I found an effective workaround.
Before I start an important writing project, I first state my intentions. What am I looking to accomplish with this task? Is it a sales letter? Do I want the reader to buy now, or simply request more information? If it's an email, I want it to appear personal, without going overboard, and add my intention statement, and theres' my task. Ad copy is a completely different animal, but still, I need to know what my intentions are. Brand Awareness? Complete a subscription form? Buy now? Request more info? All of this is taken into account before I write the first word.
Then, when I sit down to write, lots of times, I wait until I can be alone for the amount of time needed to finish the project. When that isn't possible, I just turn on my Neuroprogrammer2 software and pop in the earbuds. I use a stock session called “Study Helper-Concentration, Focus, and Memory” as opposed to “Study Helper-Learning Complex Tasks/Frustration Reduction”.
I've discovered that when I'm writing, some of those distractions still occur, but using the brainwave entrainment sessions designed for that particular task, I'm able to get right back on target quickly, and produce better results than I would if I tried to write without any outside assistance. Of this I'm sure.
Surprisingly enough, I also write quickly, and more easily with the soundtracks than without them, and finish in record time. All that's left is proofreading and editing. Keeping my original task in mind, and allowing the thoughts to flow, I've been pleasantly surprised by the increase in the quality of my work.
Creative writing can be a daunting task for the most prolific writers at times. I'm very pleased with the improvements this little secret has made not only in the quality of the items I write, but the effectiveness and my ability to stay on target and accomplish my tasks while increasing the amount of time I have to spend on other aspects of my business.

And use my paraphrasing of it, to explain succintly as to why I no longer work:
It would go something like this:
Work (the business world). Any job at all, is such an interruption to the creative writing process.
My workaround?
Get around working.
